dean lane - slab

A low-cost skatepark as part of a community project, maximising the use of open space - often an overlooked element of skatepark design.

The Slab’ is the latest addition to the legendary Dean Lane, in Bristol. This was a community project to develop a skate space in a disused area of Dame Emily Park. The project exemplifies the regenerating of a space with the purpose of taking advantage of the limited budget in creating a spacious layout, so often overlooked.

The slab is also a prime example of working together with the local community, bringing together varied skills and interests in input into the finished product: One of the country’s most well-known skate spots.

CANVAS was able to create this space by engaging with various stakeholders, including Bristol City Council and the local skateboarding community. We would like to give a shout-out to Dan Higginson (of Clockwise Media) for spearheading this project and to @mrpenfold for the artwork.

The Slab consists of a simple design: a ledge, a gap, a manual pad, a flat bar, and a number of concrete curbs. The main feature of the area is open space.
